About us · Austin, TX

The people behind your taxes in Austin, TX.

Right Step is a small firm on E Slaughter Ln. The advisor you meet is the one who prepares your return, files your LLC with the state and picks up the phone in October — not an assistant who passes your file along.

Our story

We’re built for the other ten months.

Plenty of tax offices in Austin are built around ten weeks of the year. Right Step isn’t, and that single decision shapes everything else about how we work.

A return is one afternoon. What comes after it is the rest of the year: the LLC that needs a Franchise Tax Report, the books that have to be reconciled every month, the credit report with an error on it, the health plan whose 1095-A shows up in February and changes your refund. Most people hand those five things to five different vendors, and then spend their own time being the only person who sees the whole picture.

We built Right Step so one advisor holds the whole file. Same person for the taxes, the books, the LLC, the credit and the coverage — in the office on E Slaughter Ln, on the phone, or on video if coming in doesn’t fit your week. Today we work with families, self-employed contractors and small business owners in Austin and across Texas, Monday through Sunday, 8 AM to 9 PM.

Straight to a human

The person you meet is the person who does the work.

Your file doesn’t get passed from hand to hand. You work with the same advisor from the first fifteen minutes through October, and that advisor knows what’s in your return without pulling it up for the first time.

  • One advisor for your taxes, your LLC, your credit and your insurance — nobody hands you off.
  • Price and scope in writing before we start. Government filing fees are named up front and kept separate.
  • IRS Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) — authorized by the IRS to verify your documents in our office, so your passport never goes in the mail.
The team

Two names, two credentials you can verify.

Not a call center and not a storefront that appears in February. A small team with credentials that are on file with the IRS, the State of Texas and Intuit — and that you can check yourself before you book anything.

Heidy Novales Mauri

Insurance & Notary

Heidy handles the coverage side: health plans through the Marketplace, private plans and life insurance — lined up with your taxes so the 1095-A doesn’t surprise you in April. She’s also a Texas Notary Public, so documents that need notarizing get handled in the same visit instead of sending you across town. She also translates documents between English and Spanish, billed separately.

Leonardo Martin de la Nuez

Bookkeeping & Accounting

Leonardo keeps the books current month to month in QuickBooks — reconciled accounts, a real Profit & Loss, and a clear picture of what you can actually deduct. The point is arriving at tax season with the numbers already done, instead of a shoebox of receipts and a week of guessing.

Credentials & certifications

Credentials you can verify yourself.

Everything below is a real, current credential held by someone on this team. Nothing here is a membership logo or a course certificate — and where a public registry exists, we link to it.

Being an IRS Certified Acceptance Agent is an agreement with the IRS that lets us verify your identity documents in our office and submit your ITIN application on your behalf. In plain terms: your passport never goes in the mail and never sits in a processing center for two months.

How we work

Three rules we don’t bend.

The price is in writing

You know what you’re paying and what it covers before any work starts. Government filing fees are named separately, so nothing gets added at the end.

No lecture

Credit in bad shape, or a few years you never filed? We’ve seen it. We start from where you actually are and work forward.

An answer within 24 hours

Every message gets a real reply the same day during office hours — and we’re open Monday through Sunday, 8 AM to 9 PM.

Who we work with

Find your situation on this list.

Self-employed and 1099 contractors

Deductions you’re entitled to and quarterly estimates that don’t leave you with a bill in April. This is the biggest slice of who walks in.

LLC and small business owners

We know the Texas side, not the generic version: Franchise Tax Report, Sales & Use Tax, Comptroller deadlines — plus the books behind them.

Families filing a W-2 return

Straightforward returns done right, with the credits you qualify for actually claimed. Filed once, not amended twice.

Anyone a few years behind

Unfiled years are fixable and they aren’t automatically a debt — plenty of them turn out to be refund years. We work backwards, in order, no lecture.

Take the first step

Book 15 minutes with the person who’ll do the work.

Book a call, or send a message if that’s easier. No commitment and no fine print — you get a straight read on your situation, a price and a scope in writing.
