What you’ll learn here

  • Yes, a credit score can exist under your ITIN — the bureaus build your file just like with an SSN.
  • Secured cards, and some unsecured ones, that accept an ITIN to start your history.
  • A step-by-step strategy from zero history to a solid score.
  • Your history is portable if you get a Social Security number later.
Before you start

The reality of credit with an ITIN

Your credit file can exist

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion open a file linked to your ITIN as soon as a reported account starts showing activity under your name — the same way it works with an SSN.

Not every institution reports ITINs

Some cards and banks accept an ITIN to open the account and report to the bureaus; others don’t. That’s why the product you start with matters so much.

Your history is portable

If you obtain a Social Security number down the road, you can ask the bureaus to link or migrate the history you built with your ITIN — you don’t start from zero again.

The practical list

Credit cards that accept an ITIN

A general map by card type — not a recommendation of one product over another, and every issuer’s policies change.

TypeExamplesNotes
Secured cards (with a deposit)Capital One Secured, Discover it® SecuredAccept ITINs; approval is more accessible because the deposit lowers the issuer’s risk.
Unsecured cardsPetal, Self Visa®, Tomo CardSome evaluate your banking history instead of your score, so they take ITINs without a deposit.
Specific banksBBVA (USA), some Wells Fargo branchesITIN approval often depends on the branch — better to apply in person with your physical ITIN letter.
Store cardsMacy’s, Kohl’sSometimes accept ITINs and ask for a lower starting score — but not every store. Confirm before applying.

Another route

What about personal loans with an ITIN?

Personal loans with an ITIN are a less direct path than secured cards, but they exist — some alternative lenders evaluate applications with an ITIN instead of an SSN.

Before signing any loan, compare the APR carefully. The “ITIN loans” niche also attracts predatory offers with very high rates — if something feels urgent or too easy, run it by us before you sign.

Step-by-step strategy

Building your score from zero with an ITIN

1

Get your ITIN if you don’t have one

Without an ITIN there’s no credit file to build. It’s the mandatory first step.

2

Apply for a secured card

Deposit the minimum the issuer asks — that deposit becomes your starting credit limit.

3

Use under 30% of your limit

And pay the balance in full every month. Utilization and payment history are what weigh most in your score.

4

Give your history time

A first calculable score usually appears after several months of consistently reported activity.

5

Consider moving to an unsecured card

Once your history shows sustained on-time payments, you can qualify for a card without a deposit.

6

Diversify and stay disciplined

An auto loan or another card helps your credit mix — but a single late payment can cost you the ground you gained.

Common myths

Accounts that do not build your credit

Knowing what doesn’t help matters as much as knowing what does — so you don’t lose months thinking you’re building history when you aren’t.

  • Prepaid accounts: they aren’t credit and don’t report to the bureaus, no matter how much you use them.
  • Debit cards: they don’t build history either — they move your own money, not borrowed credit.
  • “Buy now, pay later” (BNPL): most of these services still don’t report activity to the three bureaus.
  • Paying rent or utilities: normally not reported, unless you enroll in a specific program like Experian Boost.

How we help

You’re not building this strategy alone

Analysis of your ITIN credit file

Already have history? We review your three reports and show you exactly where you stand.

A strategy built around your goal

Car, house or business: the route of cards and accounts isn’t the same for each one.

Disputing errors on your report

The FCRA applies with an ITIN the same as with an SSN — we formally dispute what’s inaccurate or unverifiable.

Month-by-month follow-through

Score check-ins and strategy adjustments — not a one-time template that leaves you on your own.

Frequently asked

Credit-with-ITIN questions, answered

Does my ITIN credit score transfer if I get a Social Security number later?
Yes. You can ask the credit bureaus to link the history you built with your ITIN to your new SSN. The process takes documentation confirming you’re the same person, but your payment history doesn’t vanish — you don’t start over.
How many points can I gain in 6 months?
We can’t promise you a number — nobody honest can, because it depends on your starting point, how many accounts you open, and how consistent your payments are. What is realistic: with a well-managed secured card, most people starting from zero have a first calculable score within the first months of reported activity.
Which secured card do you recommend to start?
We don’t recommend a specific product without knowing your case — issuer policies change, and what works for someone else won’t always work for you. On your free consultation we review which cards are accepting ITINs right now and which fits your deposit budget.
Does being an authorized user on a family member’s card help?
It can, if that card has good history and low utilization — the issuer reports the account to your file too. But it doesn’t replace having your own account: to qualify for credit later, lenders want to see your own history, not just authorized-user status.
Does paying my phone bill or rent on time help my score?
Normally no, because most utility companies and landlords don’t report on-time payments to the bureaus by default. The exception is enrolling yourself in a program like Experian Boost, which can add certain utility payments to your Experian report.
Which bureaus should I monitor, and is there a free way?
The three that matter are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can request your free reports from all three at annualcreditreport.com, and many banking and card apps now include score monitoring at no extra cost. On your consultation we show you how to read what’s being reported about you.
